Day 17 – Day 5 of the Lost City Hike

The final day and the final walk out.  We had to be up at 5am today to get started by 6.  Our walk to Machete is 14km and we had to try and get there by around 12 to have lunch before the jeeps back at 1pm.  The first hour of the walk is straight up hill – it was an interesting walk downhill on day 2 to Wiwa but a nightmare to go up it seemed to go on and on and it was fun trying to find a non-muddy path up.

The walk to the camp from night one took us about 2.5 hours (with an ice cream at Aidan Camp) to have a break before the hill up to the indigenous school and the downhill to camp 1 and the first 8km of our 14km were finished.

After watermelon and a bit of chocolate covered cake we headed off for Machete. There was a marginal uphill component to the last 6km but it was mostly down, down, down.  Stu, Anne, Andrew and I got to Machete about 11:55 – Anne was technically the first to arrive as she kept going when Stu, Andrew and i stopped to try and give water to a dog that had walked the whole way to The Lost City and back with us.  After lunch and a harrowing 4wd ride back to Santa Marta we cleaned up and Stu, Jayenne, Peter and I had Pina Coladas looking at the Caribbean.

We had a final dinner together – i had a traditional Santa Marta dish called Kokillas then called it a night we fly to San Jose tomorrow.

I have to say despite the bed bugs in Wiwa, Stu and I have thoroughly enjoyed the hike.  G Adventures have got a great crew together and Miguel was an amazing guide (as was Kanka the indigenous guide) and the cooks were great too.  This hike is an experience i will never forget and would recommend to anyone.  This hike is difficult but the scenery and the environment you walk through you will only experience by doing something like this.
