Day 22 – Tortoguero to La Fortuna

It’s a road trip day today – or river and road trip or combo whichever suits best lol.  Our boat out of the canals was leaving at 8:30 with breakfast at 7 so the alarm was set for 6.  Unfortunately mother nature had other ideas with howler monkeys crying out at 5:30!  This can be a little freaky as you don’t know what the sound is until you fully wake up.

As we were heading to the boats someone spotted a sloth just sitting in a tree right next to the boat shed and where we collected our wellington boots yesterday.  I don’t think the pics are great as the light was bad.  Just before we got in the boats there was a squawk and there was a toucan in another tree.

The drive to La Fortuna was about 5 hours with a break at a coffee factory which is sponsored by Planatera – G’s NGO.  The lunch was lovely, as was the coffee and the coffee liquor.  We have purchased a kilo of beans to bring home and a liquor to consume over the next few weeks.

La Fortuna is at the base of the Arenal volcano and is called fortunate as this town survived when the volcano erupted in the 60’s when two others didn’t.  Tomorrow we are off to visit some hanging bridges.
