Day 25 – La Fortuna to Monteverde

Its a big transit day today not so much in time as vehicles.  We had to be ready by 8:30 to catch a bus to Lago Arenial this morning so that we could put all our luggage on a boat and cross to the other side – apparently this saves about 4.5 uncomfortable hours of driving around the lake.  The lake/dam was created after the last eruption destroyed 2 towns one of which was Arenial.  Everyone that lived in these towns that survived moved away or went to live in La Fortuna.

After an hour in the boat we got into another bus (just as the rain came) and drove for a couple of hours to Monteverde which is up in the mountains.  We walked down from the hotel (The Heliconia) into town and had some lunch at Taco Taco and then walked back to the hotel via the herpetatirum (I finally saw a fleur-delance) which was all uphill.  It felt good to stretch our legs.

Tonight we went for a night walk and while we didn’t see a jaguar or big cat we did see a lot.  We saw an Orlingo which is possum like (moved too quickly for a photo),a baby sloth,a tarantula,  blue throated green breasted toucan (see if you can spot it in the photo), grey necked wood-rail, side striped pit viper, a bark scorpion a rufus eyed brook frog and a peak of a kinkajou.
