We did a hike through the St Elena Cloud Forest today. Even before we left the hotel we spotted a Lesson’s Motmot.
Once we’d got to the Cloud Forest NP we walked through an orchid garden then spotted our first bird – a relative of the Quetzal (the bird i really want to see) i think this was an orange bellied trogon.
We walked through the cloud forest for a couple of hours but didn’t see much – it was a sunny day so the birds and animals stayed hidden. They prefer a misty cloudy forest to move about without being spotted by predators. In addition to no clouds the October Hurricane destroyed the canopy making sunny days more dangerous to shy birds as there is no dappled light.

Below is a heliconia only found in the St Elena cloud forest
After an uneventful walk we found a white nosed coati foraging in the restaurant.
