Day Trip to St Helena Island

Today we used a Groupon and went to St Helena Island with our friends Alison and Dennis and the team from Cat O Nine Tails.  We’ve had a really great day exploring an old prison just over Moreton Bay from Wynnum.  The weather today has been absolutely spectacular considering it is the middle of winter.

The boat left at 10 and was manned by guards and a prisoner 31.  It takes about half an hour to go across the bay and we walked around the island for about 1.5 hours before we had our included lunch then walked back to the boat.  I would thoroughly recommend the tour if you have a day to kill in Brisbane.

The company taking us around the island really knew their history and it has been a very educational day.  The time has absolutely flown.  I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to have committed a crime in Brisbane between 1866 and 1932 when the island was running as a prison.

We were back in the harbour by just after 3 and are now sitting at a restaurant looking at the yacht club about to have a drink and snacks.

Prisoners only got their name back if they left the island.
