Day 12 – Hiking on Samui

Today was another early start as we are doing a hike on Koh Samui today and have to be at Meanam to meet our guide Femke by 8 am.  She has organised a driver to pick us up at 7:30 and take us to the meeting point.  I found out today that all the taxis and tuk tuks have an arrangement going on where the prices are about the same for example to set price from Chaweng to Maenam is about 500B or $25.

We had one other person join us on the hike – an Englishman named Steve who has been living here for about 5 years.  He did the  13km hike in a pair of thongs – have to respect that.

The hike started about a 10 minute car ride in to the hills and goes from Maenam-Wat Lamai-Magic Garden.  Femke’s husband will pick us up at the end and return us to Maenam.

The walk through the hills is beautiful – you are walking on roads through active fruit farms and as you go around the mountains you get different views of all the coasts except Chaweng on the east.  We stopped at a camp ground with beautiful views across the island then walked on to Wat Lamai a beautiful temple and museum with 360 degree views of the island.  We got to see both durian and jackfruit while we were out walking so now i know how the 2 fruits differ.

Our walk ended at the Magic Garden some 13 km away from where we started. We were very lucky there was a bit of a cool breeze while we were walking to make it more comfortable.

Femke’s husband dropped Steve, Stu and I off at Maenam where we went into “China Town” and had lunch on a beach -literally on a beach.  Unfortunately we didn’t bring swimmers or a towel (I was going to but the waterfall didn’t look very nice) otherwise we would have had a dip.  The food and drinks were lovely.

We have had a dip in the pool and are going to meet Linsey and Craig at 5:30 to get a taxi over to the Fisherman’s Village for dinner tonight.

Update – we had dinner on the beach at the Fisherman’s village last night – Craig and Linsey had a platter which they said was delicious, Stu had a whole red snapper and I tried green curry fried rice.
