day 6, 7 and 8 canberra

It has been a busy few days here in Canberra – and when I’ve had some down time I have been a bit too tired to do my blog.

On Tuesday (Day 6) we drove down to Braidwood a little town about half way between Canberra and Batemans Bay on the NSW south coast. We have visited it a couple of times when we have gone down the coast when mum and dad lived at Tuross. I will just say there was a lot of wildlife along the side of the road – wombats, roos and foxes unfortunately they hadn’t won their encounter with cars and trucks (putting it delicately).

Braidwood is a beautiful little place and has a main street (the highway) which is lined with pubs, shops, cafes and various galleries and eateries. Stu was pretty excited about going down as there were a couple of shops he wanted to look at if they were still open after COVID. One of the changes that have happened is that a lot of the shops and cafes are only open Thursday to Sunday (the days Canberran’s commute down the coast) so unfortunately a lot of places weren’t open. The photos below are of Braidwood.

From here we headed back to Canberra via Bungendore which is another little town on the road to the coast – some great antique stores and a woodworks. We had some lunch and then headed back to see mum and dad’s new apartment and have dinner with Mat and Graham at Greasy Monkey in Braddon (cocktails, burgers, pizza and way too many fries).

Wednesday – my Birthday. We went to Manuka and had breakfast with mum and dad – we all had to be finished by 9 as the car parks were 30 minute carparks and started at 8:30. Stu and I then went for a walk in town while mum and dad waited for the removalists (who didn’t end up coming until about 4:30 in the afternoon). We had dinner with mum and dad, Kris and Shane at a great Pizza restaurant called Locale in Deakin. The food was amazing. Eric got to meet Dusty and Axel his puppy cousins at my sisters.

Today (day 8) we picked mum and dad up at 7:30 and headed to Cooma – we were either going to head down Brown Mountain to the coast or head up to the snow. Unfortunately Thredbo is in Kosciusko National Park – I hadn’t thought that would matter but you can’t take dogs into the park or to Thredbo.

We stopped at Jindabyne and the lake was really full – we were going to take Eric for a bit of a walk but a lot of the shore was under water. A lady told us they have been emptying it since January but couldn’t keep up with the rain brining more water in to the lake. The play equipment they take my nephews and niece to were underwater – note the bin at the back – this area normally has a beach next to the playground so there is a lot of extra water in the lake.

From here we went to Crackenback and drove through the resort before going to Wildbrumby Distillery. There is snow on the Mountains already so you can imagine how cold the wind was. The train is the Skitube which runs up to Blue Cow and Perisher.

From here we went to Crackenback and drove through the resort before going to Wildbrumby Distillery. We had a very nice lunch there looking over the mountains – the only downside was the European wasps – yes Stu took a photo to compare to the warnings at Tidbinbilla. This place is absolutely amazing and they now make their own Gin as well as Schnapps.

We had a nice uneventful drive back to Canberra and dropped mum and dad back at their apartment. It was -2 this morning (guess who took Eric out?) and I think it is supposed to be the same tomorrow – it is the first time I saw a warning on the car about the possibility of ice on the road – you don’t get that in Brisbane.
