Bali Trip – Day 1 BNE-SYD-DPS

Today we are travelling to Bali.  It has been almost three years to the day since we last headed overseas.  A lot of course has happened, COVID-19 has closed Australia’s borders for almost two years, a similar reaction many other countries in the Asia Pacific region.

Our last trip overseas was to Bali, we spend about ten days here over Christmas 2019.  We stayed at Sanur then Lembongan Island then back at Sanur the last time we were here.  Bali was bustling back then, there were vendors everywhere shops selling carvings, paintings and tourist items, so many food places (very few selling Indonesian fare) and of course the Sanur night market.

Over in Kuta there were plenty of Aussies being the party animal they can be known to be when they are over in Bali, we were only over in Kuta for three hours and all we wanted to do was get back to Sanur where it was a little less boisterous. Ubud was still the alternate yoga/artists enclave back in 2019.

I am hoping that when we get to Sanur that we will still see some of the old Bali.  The Balinese are a beautiful and welcoming people and I am hoping this has survived whatever COVID has thrown at the island.  We are looking forward to staying at the Maya Sanur which has a beautiful bar overlooking the sea out towards Lembongan.

Last night we dropped Eric off at Stu’s parents – luckily for us he and Henry get on so well.  Today we flew from Brisbane to Sydney and then from there on to Denpasar.  I had built an almost 5 hour window in to our travel to make sure I didn’t get grumpy and stressed while we were transiting.

I had been told by QANTAS that because I had booked two tickets that I couldn’t check our bags through to Denpasar, however the guy at the QANTAS club asked where we were going after he checked our first bag through and told us that if we’d said we were going to Bali he could have checked the bags through.  So we ended up having to collect our bags in Sydney and transit to the international terminal on the TBus.

Our flight to Sydney was delayed almost an hour due to strong winds at Sydney and reducing the airport to a single runway.  The luggage then took ages to come out and when we went to catch the TBus which runs every 15 minutes the bus was running late.  We ended up getting all checked in with about 1.5 hours to go for the flight – at least we didn’t have time to get bored but had enough time to grab some lunch at the QANTAS club.  As it turns out our flight ended up boarding 20 minutes early and departed on time.

We are now at the Maya Sanur which is beautiful. They have upgraded us to a nest suite for no extra cost – I’ll take some photos of it in the light in the morning. The room is beautiful and comfortable. Time to go to sleep now lol been a long day.
