Day 4 Singapore

The days are speeding by now – we only have a few days left in Singapore this leg and then we are off to Phuket.  Jayenne and Peter will arrive Monday night (15th) and we will catch up with them for breakfast on Tuesday.  We meet the rest of the gang on the plane to Phuket.

We have planned to do the whole ridge walk through Singapore this time rather than the shorter one I came across in Lonely Planet last time.

The walk starts at Kent Ridge Park, through Hort Park and then through a number of parks and along elevated walkways until you climb up to Mt Faber the highest point in Singapore. In total approximately 10km from beginning to end.  Last time we did this we started at Hort Park.

We caught the MRT to Kent Ridge Station then started the 1km walk to where the actual trail starts.  There are some very confusing changes to the path as you navigate Kent Ridge Park.  The easiest route is actually to use the canopy walk but it was being repaired so we had to try and navigate our way along the twisting paths – luckily it was relatively well signposted.

The elevated walkway starts at the far end of Hort Park, unfortunately when we got there the walkway and the parks connecting to Henderson Waves was closed for repair. We ended up having to do a significant detour (not well signposted) to get to Henderson Waves.  I think we missed a turn as there was a group of girls we passed at one point already on Henderson Waves when we got there.

Once over Henderson Waves you are at Mt Faber and you have to climb the rest of the way either following the road or a set of stairs straight to the top.  We’d had enough of stairs so took the path that stayed with the road.  The view from the top of Mt Faber is amazing.  We had a cold drink watching the cable cars going down to Harbourfornt.  Once we had rested we walked the last couple of kilometres down to Harbourfront.

I had booked us a gin tasting at Tanglin Gin one of the new micro-distilleries here in Singapore at 4:30 – this was a very interesting experience.  After initially being told we couldn’t do the tour because it doesn’t run on Sunday (I knew they meant the tour of the distillery), however they soon realised we had only booked in for the tasting experience.  I’m not really a drink alcohol straight type of person but you did get to experience the different flavours without tonic.  The ticket included a G&T and bar snacks, we wanted to order some more hummus but we were told the bar was closed.  So basically within half an hour we were in then out.

We caught the MRT back to Orchard Rd which was absolutely packed by Filipino maids who flock here on a Sunday to send their wages back to the Philippines through the many remittance services in the mall. There is also a lot of stores selling very cheap clothes and electrical goods including some that may not be legit.
