Day 11 and 12 – Thailand

I am really struggling writing the blog at the moment, even where we have nothing on, we are still really busy doing things.

These are our last full days in Phuket, we are being picked up on Wednesday to be taken to Phi Phi Island.

Day 11

Today we have a cooking school booked.  The school is at the Blue Elephant in Phuket Town (where we went to the Sunday Market).  We had nothing on in the morning which is just as well as it has absolutely poured all day.

We tried to go for a little walk to drop our laundry in but, no sooner had we dropped our laundry off than the skies opened up again so we came back to the hotel.  Our “half-board” is getting a massive workout at the moment as it has been too wet, or we have been too tired, to hit the streets.

I had thought the tour included a pick up and by about 1:40 was starting to get worried.  As it turned out it didn’t include a transfer – when I checked the voucher it said pick up time 1:30, pick up location Blue Elephant.  After numerous phone conversations we managed to get a taxi out to the Blue Elephant.  We got there about 2:40 (an hour after it shoud have started).  The chef was very accommodating and we started the class.  The one advantage to being late was that the kitchen staff did all of the chopping and pounding (mortar and pestle), so really all we had to do was cook.

The managed to fit four dishes in, we made a Beef Yellow Curry, Tom Yum (chicken for me prawn for everyone else), a stir fry (chicken for me fish for everyone else) and Mango Sticky Rice.  The chef, Joy, did really well and stayed calm as she tried to compress 3.5 hours in to 2.25 hours.

We all got to eat our dishes at the end of the course, and I even ate my sticky rice with mango.   I do not like mango (a memory from my teenage years) but these did not have the taste of mango you get from orange and mango juice, so I am going to give it another go before we leave Thailand to see how I go with mango.

We caught a cab back to the motel around 6, the rain had stopped for a little while, had a drink at the bar and hit the sack early.

Day  12

Today we didn’t have anything planned (other than a massage at 1).  We had three massages for two people included in our rooms and we have scheduled our last one at the Diamond Cliffs for today.

The weather today is absolutely prefect, there is barely a cloud in the sky and you wouldn’t know that it had pretty much rained for the last week.

We hit the beach for a couple of hours.  We caught a tuk tuk to Kamala Beach and hired some chairs.  The water was a bit dirty so I didn’t go in in case I kicked something with my left foot.  The weather was amazing though and just sitting under the umbrellas on the sand for a few hours made our day.

After the massages were out of the way we headed into Phuket to explore the north side of Patong.  We have only really explored up to Bangla Road at the moment.  After lots of people trying to entice us with “massage, mister, massage”, “tailor”, “shopping mister” we headed back to the motel for dinner as my foot was a bit sore as we had walked 24 km today.  I thought telling one tailor I leave in the morning would stop him from trying to get me in his shop, all he said was I can have ready for tomorrow.

We had dinner at Sea Salt which is across the road from the motel and sits over the water.  We were joined by Luke and Alice for a very nice dinner under the stars.  I even manged to get a shot of Venus (a little grainy but you can see it is a planet) sitting next to the moon. I was a beautiful way to spend our last night in Phuet.
