Day 15 – Victoria Falls to Kasane, Botswana

This morning we are transferring from Victoria Falls to Kasane in Botswana. We got to have a little sleep in as we weren’t going to do the Victoria Falls tour until 8 am, we did however need to be packed before we went so that we could just get ourselves tidied up and checked out by 11 when we are scheduled to be picked up.

We were driven to the falls and we then walked the 16 viewing spots over about 1.6km before you turn around from spot 16 then head back to the car park which is at spot 1.

The falls are beautiful, we are here in low season as the falls as the levels drop during dry season and they have been dry since February. They are hoping in late November they will get rain and then the whole falls will be flowing. Our guide explained that there are no visible rocks when the river and falls are in high season. The Victoria Falls are one of the 7 natural wonders and one of the three great waterfalls.

The falls are broken up into the Devils Cataract, the main falls, the horseshoe falls and the rainbow falls. The last two had no water over them at the moment as the Zambezi is quite low. This also means the path isn’t as slippery and the falls are easier to see as there isn’t as much mist.

After we’d finished at the falls we farewelled our driver and Princess at the lodge and waited for our driver to arrive. Luckily for us Princess was still at hand as it turned out that while Intrepid had told us 11 am pick up it was actually 10 and our driver had gone. Also luckily for us Intrepid also contract the transfers through Shearwater so the driver came back and we hit the road about 11:15. Peter and Jayenne were only a few minutes ahead of us.

The drive and transfer through immigration was fairly painless the only issue was with our shoes which had to be sterilised because of foot and mouth disease in Zimbabwe.

We’ve just got back from a walk up to the shopping centre and are now at Thebes River Lodge our plans are to have dinner then hit the sack early. The sign below is at the gate as you leave the lodge.

Tomorrow we do a game drive so we’ll be starting at 5:45 am. There is a hippo crossing sign just up from our lodge (because hippos cross there at night to graze on the other side of the highway). It is a lot hotter here in Botswana than Zimbabwe or South Africa.
