Day 16 – Chobe National Park

I’ll start the blog by a quote from the inimitable Dorothy, we aren’t in Kansas anymore Toto! The difference between the accomodation and friendliness of the staff at Victoria Falls compared to the accomodation and staff here in Botswana is like we are in Oz but have arrived in the Wicked Witch of the West’s land instead of Munchkin Land.

The safari lodge we are staying at had mixed our booking and Peter and Jayenne’s booking up. They were given our package and we were told we were just bed and breakfast and that we would have to pay for meals and safaris. By the time we got to the restaurant I had an email from Intrepid telling me I seemed to have booked the resort and my transfers through both Intrepid and Booking.com and I needed to try and get a refund through Booking.com. Needless to say I hadn’t booked twice. By the time lunch was over we were back on the right package and Jayenne and Peter were in their correct room (they had booked the last room available through Booking.com and had a two bedroom apartment).

Stu and I walked over to the local mall and bought some supplies for Safari in the morning – we did this because we were told there were no food and drinks supplied as part of the safari. We probably shouldn’t have walked because of the animals and we have just realised (day 2) we are across the road from Kasane Prison and the walls are not very high and prisoners seem to be walking around on the outside during the day.

This morning we went for a safari drive with a very maverick driver (much more than other game drivers) who virtually blocked the lions’ walking path with the jeep, the lions passed by us about a meter from the car.

We saw a new animal today, we saw a Jackal feeding by the Chobe River. We saw lots of hippos (both going in to the park and leaving) and Giraffes.

We saw three leopards while were in the park, one in a tree with his kill and the other two were on the ground – again we stopped within a metre of the leopards. One of the leopards that we saw on the ground, the cub, was feeding on an Impala they had caught.

On the way back to the lodge we spotted two male elephants again, the driver stopped the car in the path the second male was taking. There were a few deep breaths when the elephant stopped in front of the car and looked like he was going to charge us.

We are back at the lodge safely and are waiting for our afternoon/evening river safari tonight.
