Langkawi – Day 7 (Last Full Day)

Today is our last full day here on Langkawi. Tomorrow (Saturday) we have to be at the airport and drop the car off by about 1pm. Check out is 12 so it all works out quite well in terms of timing, and so far the airline is saying all of our flights are on time. We have about 45 minutes to get through immigration and change terminals in KL so it will be a bit of a rush but they are all one ticket so the airline has to get us to the plane.

Finally a totally clear day today, and we did the cable car yesterday, so today we decided to drive to Gunung Raya and have a look at the view from the highest point of the island. The drive took us through little villages and past the first night markets we went to on Monday night. The mountain’s roads wind their way up to the top and have lots of macaques and dogs along it.

At the top of the Mountain there is a car park, a closed observation tower (I knew it was closed), and a big building complex again closed. The buildings have stairs going up to a concrete landing where you would have a view of the whole island but even that was closed. This meant that you could only see one side of the island from the car park. I am not sure why that was closed, I get the buildings weren’t open but climbing the stairs to the landing wouldn’t be dangerous.

We drove back down the mountain and had a Mexican standoff with a male macaque about half way down. We worked out he wanted us to stop as he kept moving in front of the car. When we stopped he sauntered to Stu’s door and sat there waiting for us to give him food – we won that battle we didn’t have anything to give him. It was quite obviously a learnt behaviour that had worked for him before though.

We drove back the long way and visited the Kraft Komplex (don’t bother) which did have some nice stuff for sale but there is nothing there, even the cafe is closed. I don’t think there were any displays just little stores.

We got some fuel, then I sat on my new (very expensive) prescription glasses snapping and twisting the frame. I’ve put super glue on the frame but I’ll have to order a new pair when we get home. We had chicken rice at the chicken rice shop in the Cenang Mall (about the only thing open at 12:30pm). We’ve worked out a number of the ones that are open in the morning only service Nasi Lemak and Nasi Campur which are a breakfast food and are closed by 12 then the next shift opens about 2. Cafe’s seem to open about 2pm (other than chains like Zus and Starbucks).

We paid for the infinity pool in the afternoon and relaxed by the pool until 6pm when we walked into Cenang and ate at the night market. I am going to miss $4 Nasi Goreng.
