Canada Day 12

This morning was a slow start as we don’t have any firm plans, maybe a little bit of a hike to see if we can spot any Moose or bears.

After a leisurely breakfast we jumped in the car and headed out to Maligne Lake, we are hoping to get a lake cruise and go out to near the glaciers. Sam made a passing comment yesterday about how he prefers the nighttime animal viewing tours to the lake tours as they are not as highbrow and when we got to the lake we understood why.

The Maligne Lake is very beautiful, but it is very busy as well.  We had to park in the second car park and walk down to the lake.  While Stu and Linsey went back to the car, I went to see if we could get on a cruise (Sam said they were worth it),  The cruise was $544 CAD for the four of us and the first one they could get us on was 14:30 (it was 10:30 when we got there).  Now I understood what Sam meant about the type of people on the tours who could afford the cruise and also understood why the tours I saw online were so expensive ($220 AUD or more from town per person).

As we were not going to be doing a lake cruise, we did the Moose Lake circuit which runs along the shore of Maligne Lake and into an area favoured by Moose.  The lake was beautiful but unfortunately there were no Moose at the lake today.  Linsey, Stu and I completed the loop and met Molly back at the restaurant where we had a late lunch before heading to the Beaver dam from last night.  The Beaver dam was another bust, but we saw some Elk on the side of the road on the way back to the cabins.

We booked at Earl’s for dinner and sat on the balcony having drinks and food watching people go by on the street below.  We watched some people that had used the coin laundry and then gone for a walk and not looked at the time the laundromat closed – they were there about 40 minutes after it shut.  We also watched a moron in a big RV try to go down a little alleyway next to the grocery store – right where there was a sign saying no RV parking.  He of course blocked the only way out of the grocery store car park while he and his wife went and did their grocery shopping.

We are on the road early tomorrow to do the Icefields Parkway Lake Lousie, Banff and Field – but that is a story for tomorrow as I am too tired tonight to write that adventure tonight – we are in Field and finally have Wi-Fi.
