Canada Day 15 and 16 (Driving Days)

Over the last couple of days we made our way down from glacier territory and the national parks to Vancouver. We had 840 (ish) kilometres to drive so we broke it into two parts and drove from Field to Kamloops and then Kamloops to Vancouver.

The highway down from Field to Golden and then on to Kamloops is pretty amazing it’s the “1” which runs from west to east (or east to west) and runs through the Alpine region down to the farmlands at Revelstoke and Salmon Arm.

We had to take an alternate route as the main highway was closed for some reason (we think maybe wildfires), when we got about 100km west of Golden apple maps tried to redirect us back to Golden and then take a 800km route to Kamloops because of the road closure. We stuck to our guns and got to Revelstoke then on to Salmon Arm where we had Wendy’s for lunch.

We got into Kamloops just after 3, had a little rest and then visited a shopping centre (Molly had some shopping she wanted to do), before we had sushi for dinner at Heaven which has a 4.9/5 on TikTok (or google not sure which).

Stu and I woke up early this morning and had a quick breakfast before we did a short walk along the river where we saw 2 juvenile male elk – remembering what Sam said we kept a distance from them as we didn’t want to experience their stomping behaviour.

We were on the road by 9 and made Vancouver airport just after 1pm where we dropped the car off at Thrifty. There were a couple of areas along the road where it warned us to beware wildlife and wildfires. We passed through one wildfire (at 120km an hour) that was still burning up the mountain a little but we didn’t see anything fleeing the wildfire. Stu did see a few deer just before we got to Vancouver

It has been fun driving to Vancouver Island and through the Mountains over the past 12 days, but I am secretly glad the driving piece is over and I can be a passenger for a little while.

We have checked in to the Atrium Hotel which is in the Vietnamese area of town, we are just over 5km South of Canada Place where the cruise ship will leave from tomorrow. We have booked on to the shuttle for tomorrow morning and will get dropped off at the terminal just after 10am.

We are going to try either Vietnamese or Chinese for our dinner tonight then pack all of our stuff away for the morning. We have googled the ship’s website and the girls can take 1 bottle of 750ml of wine or sparkling wine on to the ship per person, so we hit the bottle shop down the road and bought some wine to take with us.
