Canada Day 18/Alaska Day 2

Today is a cruising day so we’ve booked plenty of activities to keep us busy while the ship cruises up the inside passage.

It was very rough when we woke up this morning. We are going through a piece of open ocean for most of the day. We tried to do some laps of deck 3 (where the walking track is, however it was very wet and the rain was coming in so we went to breakfast.

Everyone looks very sick at breakfast this morning. After breakfast I returned to our cabin to have a shower. While I was showering the ship listed to port I nearly fell over, Stu said at the Lido Market a whole lot of plates smashed. The Captain said later they had to make a sudden course correction because of a whale.

The sea is very rough and they have locked the outside doors so no one can go outside and go for a walk. After we did the wildlife presentation this morning, we were walking back to our rooms and someone had thrown up in the stairwell.

As there wasn’t much we could do while the ship was rolling around, we had a light lunch and a little lie down until. About 2pm, the ship stopped rolling and the sun came out (we were in a passage so the seas were calmer).

The doors to the deck were still locked, so Stuart Linsey and I came up to the crows nest to have a coffee. We managed to get a seat right at the window and then bam, humpback whales! I even saw one slap its tail into the water through the binoculars. They were all playing in front of the ship.

Today was the type of day Stu was dreading the ship was rocking and we were locked in, I’m not sure we’ll be cruising again.

We were able to go outside and walk the deck and there were more swimming off to the port side – every time we did a lap we saw whales. When we got back to our room we watched whales from the balcony.

It was formal night tonight so we got a little dressed up and headed to the dining room. The seas stayed calm all the way up to bed time, the ship is rocking around as we hit the hay. Tomorrow the clocks go back an hour to Alaska time.
