Canada Day 20/Alaska Day 4

Today we woke up and the ship was already docked in Skagway Alaska. Skagway is the gateway to the Yukon, which is in Canada so we need our passports to cross the boarder today.

We were going to try and walk into Skagway and back before our tour started but you have to take a shuttle to the end of the pier, all we had time for was to go to the end then come back.

We joined Linsey and Molly in the queue before we boarded the bus. Our driver is Evette.

On the way to Carcross we made a few unscheduled stops to take some pictures of the scenery – it is very cold and overcast, at the Alaska sign it even started snowing.

Before we crossed the border into Canada we saw a waterfall called Bridal Veil Falls. Women would go up to the falls and drink from them to become married.

Our first official stop is Carcross. Carcross is a beautiful little town and has the longest running general store in Canada. I bought some maple syrup from here that is collected and made locally.

Our next stop was Caribou Crossing which was supposed to have huskies, disappointingly they didn’t have huskies or puppies so we couldn’t even pet the puppy. They did have a couple of museums which were interesting. The lunch was ok but they made nice donuts.

From here we went to Emerald Lake which is protected and you can see different shades with the shallow areas looking white because of the calcium carbonate on the bottom. We saw a bear near here as we headed to catch the train back to Skagway.

We joined the train at Fraser then headed down the White Pass railway. It is one of the engineering wonders of the world. It is built on the side of the cliff and crosses several canyons on the way down. It was amazing but unfortunately it was very foggy so the pictures aren’t great.

When we got back to Skagway it was cold and rainy so we did a quick shop then back to the ship for an early dinner at the Lido Market then we caught the show Crossroads which was country/western and folk. It was pretty good.
