BALI DAY 3

Early start today as we are catching the fast boat over the Nusa Penida. I thought for some reason that it was to Nusa Lembongan and then we were being picked up, however it was a boat directly to Nusa Penida. The boats are far more comfortable and surprisingly there are far more of them than there are those going to Lembongan.

We met our guide and driver for the snorkelling component of the trip and headed out. The water between the two islands was surprisingly rough. I think a storm might have been brewing for a few days whipping the waves up.

Our first stop was at Manta Bay. Stu goes full snorkelling whereas I normally go with the mask/snorkel and no flippers. It turns out with my apnea problem extends to blocking my nose with the goggles so I didn’t wear them either – I just swam in the rough seas. There were a lot of people at Manta Bay, but there were also some mantas. The driver (captain) moved the boat around a few times and we ended up spotting a manta in the water. Stu swum quite close to it while I saw it from the boat it was beautiful and graceful.

From here we moved to a couple of locations the calmest being the Wall near the port, still lots of people though. Surprisingly I think Nusa Penida is busier than Sanur.

After snorkelling we had an early lunch and even Harriet and Beaks joined us briefly (I really haven’t been getting them out very much). I even had a little drink at lunch time (Pina Colada). Then our driver/guide, Wayan, met us and took us to three different locations – Kelingking beach, Broken Beach and Angel Billabong.

The headland at Kelingking looks a little like a T-Rex head. There were a lot of tourists here too – this is a theme for Nusa Penida. Some very rude – you line up to have your photo on the steps and some of them would just walk down and stop right next to you or in front of you and start having their picture taken. I had to tell a young German tourist off who decided she was far more important than all the people lined up on the stairs. We also saw our first and only monkey so far.

As a note the most dangerous part of this place is the beach people die here because they insist on swimming at the beach which has dangerous rips.

From here we went to Broken Beach and Angel Billabong. Broken Beach was beautiful but the rain had washed a lot of silt into the Billabong and it was very murky. Just before we went to Machu Pichu a number of years ago, a tourist died trying to take an extreme selfie – here the stupidity level was no different. A young Russian guy who was quite tall had climbed over the cliff and all we could see was his head. He was trying to take a better photo – note he survived.

After a very rough crossing we got back to our hotel in time for happy hour and a walk along the beach to have dinner. The photo of the water is as supplied by the iPhone.
